Activated Carbon
Activated Charcoal
What is Activated Carbon?
Activated carbon (also called activated charcoal, activated coal or active carbon) is a very useful adsorbent. Due to their high surface area, pore structure (micro, meso and macro), and high degree of surface reactivity, activated carbon can be used to purify, dechlorinate, deodorize and decolorize both liquid and vapor applications. Moreover, activated carbons are economical adsorbents for many industries such as water purification, food grade products, cosmetology, automotive applications, industrial gas purification, petroleum and precious metal recovery mainly for gold. The base materials for activated carbons are coconut shell, coal or wood.
APPLICATION
Different types of activated carbon are suited for various specialized applications.
- Granulated activated carbon
- Pelletized activated carbon
- Powdered activated carbon
- Impregnated activated carbon
- Catalytic activated carbon
Each grade and size of activated carbon is application specific. Selecting the correct activated carbon product and mesh size depends on the application and contaminants you plan to remove.
Typical applications are:
- Removal of volatile organic compounds such as Benzene, TCE, and PCE.
- Hydrogen Sulfide (HS) and removal of waste gases
- Impregnated activated carbon used as a bacteria inhibitor in drinking water filters
- Removal of taste and odor causing compounds such as MIB and geosmin
- Recovery of gold
- Removal of chlorine and chloramine
Designing a proper activated carbon filtration system with enough contact time, pressure drop, and vessel size is important. Also, activated carbon’s physical and chemical characteristics play an important role in removing contaminants effectively. Therefore, material testing is essential and ASTM test methods such as butane activity, surface area, density, and water content (moisture) can be carried out to find the best suitable material for your application.

Granular Activated carbon
We're on a mission to supply you with products of excellent quality.
Granular Activated Carbon
Activated Charcoal
Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is made from high quality raw material, such as coal, wood, and coconut shell. The adsorptive capacity of granular activated carbon makes it ideal for removing a variety of contaminants from water, air, liquids, and gases to improve taste, odor, and color. Typical GAC applications are municipal and environmental water treatment, waste gas treatment, mercury removal in industrial gasses, food and beverage, metal recovery, and even medicinal use. Additionally, various particle sizes of GAC is optimal for use in vapor and liquid adsorption applications. Our coconut shell based activated carbon has a higher percentage of micro-pores, which makes it highly effective for the filtration of small organics structures, recovery of precious metals and reduction of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in potable water. Our wood based activated carbon has more macro-pores structure making them better for de-colorization of liquids and removal of larger molecular structures like MIB (2-Methylisoborneol) and Geosmin. For general filtration purposes, our coal based activated carbon, with its intermediate pore structure, would be the best choice.
Pelletized Activated Carbon
We're on a mission to supply you with products of excellent quality.
Activated Carbon
Activated Charcoal
Our Pelletized Activated Carbon is produced from coal, wood, and coconut shell by high-temperature steam activation and manufactured with suitable binders under stringent quality control. The pelletized carbon has a low ash content, large surface area, high mechanical strength, extended pore volume, and chemical stability. These characteristics make it ideal for many vapor phase applications. The cylindrical uniformity of its shape makes it particularly useful in applications where there is a likelihood of a low-pressure drop over granular activated carbon. The adsorptive capacity of pelletized carbon makes it ideal for removing a variety of contaminants from air and gas streams, the recovery of solvents, and for evaporative emissions controls.
Powdered Activated Carbon
We're on a mission to supply you with products of excellent quality.
Activated Carbon
Activated Charcoal
Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) is similar to Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) as it is made from high quality coal, wood or coconut shell raw material. PAC is typically considered to have particles less than U.S standard 80 mesh size, which makes it ideal for water treatment. Our PAC is a reliable, economical water treatment option for taste and odor control and removal of organic compounds. The use of PAC is beneficial economically and environmentally, since it reduces operating costs, produces minimal waste sludge, allows for the conservation of resources, and provides superior water quality.
Application ofActivated Carbon
Activated carbon is an efficient and cost-effective solution for removing a wide range of contaminants from industrial and municipal wastewater, contaminated ground and groundwater.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers adsorption by activated carbon to be the best available technology for the removal of many contaminants in surface water. Activated carbon aids in the removal of:
- Compounds that cause unwanted taste, odor or color
- Organic materials from decaying plants and other naturally-occurring contaminants
- Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) linked to chlorine and alternative disinfectants
- Algal toxins and cyanotoxins, such as microcystin-LR, cylindrospermopsin and anatoxin-A
- Endocrine-disrupting compounds that can adversely affect hormonal systems
- Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) contamination
